Try out the Russian Roulette Grading method.
Students require a significant amount of composing time in order to develop their writing skills, but this does not necessitate the addition of additional grading to your schedule. During the first 10 minutes of every class, instruct students to write an answer to the daily journal question they are given. Allow students time on Friday to make any necessary revisions to their entries.
Then, at the end of class, use a spinner (here’s an example) to publicly select which journal of the day, chosen from those written during the previous week, will be scored. If the wheel lands on Wednesday, instruct students to make a note of Wednesday’s page in their journal so that you can locate it quickly, read it, and then provide commentary and a quality score on the entry.
Fill in the blanks with the completion point for the other entries without looking at them. Learners will accept this system as long as you communicate their expectations about the process in advance of the start of the course. Formative assessment should be carried out as soon as possible.
Kymberly Fergusson collects sloppy copy draughts and responds quickly to them “in order to prevent plagiarism and catch problems or misunderstandings early…” Using a tool such as SOAPSTone, you can reteach the rhetorical context to students who have fundamentally misunderstood your assignment (Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, Tone). Attach a Tracking Sheet to your email.
When I grade students’ draughts, I make a note of one or two of the most recurrent problems on a yellow cardstock tracking sheet, which students staple to each essay they write. Heavy cardstock has a better chance of surviving the semester, and coloured paper is difficult to lose track of once it has been found.
Students are aware that if they make the same error on two or more versions, their paper’s grade will suffer severely, and we will arrange a writing conference to address the problem. Whenever a large number of students make the same error, I do a mini-lesson on the subject for the whole class.
Checkmarks may be used to indicate annotations.
Instead of copy-editing an essay, make check marks in the margins to indicate where mistakes have been found to avoid confusion. A check mark is easier to type than a “comma splice,” and it does not add to the feeling of powerlessness that some people experience. Before submitting a final copy, instruct students to identify the issue and make any necessary corrections.
To help students who are struggling with their writing find solutions, I have many copies of Barbara Fine Clouse’s A Troubleshooting Guide for Writers: Strategies & Process (3rd Edition/affiliate link) on hand in the classroom at all times. Clouse provides 240 unique writing tactics to address frequent problems about higher and lower order writing in a systematic manner.
Don’t Copy-Edit an Entire Paper Unless You Have to
The majority of students lack the necessary capacity to comprehend a carefully edited work and get overwhelmed as a result. As a result, I don’t spend as much time marking up every phrase as I would if I were editing an early copy of the Magna Carta. Then have students alter the remainder of the paragraph once they’ve been given a model.
