Painting is not as simple as it may look. From proper surface preparation to finding the right tools, there are many things to think about. This article will guide you through all of these issues so that you can do painting a room with ease.
STEP ONE: PREPARE THE SPACE AND CLEAN IT WELL
The room you will be painting should be as clean as possible. Clean the walls with a commercial cleaner, such as TSP (Trisodium Phosphate), to remove any dirt or grease. STEP TWO: PREPARE THE CANVAS AND APPLY PRIMER
Rolling primer onto oil-based paints like Latex requires a different approach than rolling on latex or acrylic primers. To protect yourself, follow these safety precautions: Close all the doors and windows. Don’t forget to cover the lampshades, light bulbs or other objects you don’t want to get paint on. Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses. Set out all your tools in advance so you won’t have to hunt for anything when you’re ready to start painting.
When rolling primer onto oil-based Latex, you should use a foam brush. The type of primer you use is also important. Oil-based paint needs an oil-based primer, and latex-based paints need water-based or acrylic primers, so read the can carefully to make sure you choose the right one for your project.
Although rolling on primer takes longer than brushing on primer, it saves you time in the long run because there are no brush marks. However, even when using a foam brush to roll on primer, you’ll need to go over the surface with a paintbrush afterward in order to get rid of any brush strokes and invisible imperfections.
Once your room is primed, you need to let the primer dry for at least 24 hours until it’s completely dry.
STEP THREE: APPLY THE PAINT
You can apply paint in two ways, either with a roller or with a paintbrush. Whether you choose to use rollers or brushes is your decision; however, if you are using latex-based paints, then it is definitely easier to use rollers.
STEP FOUR: CLEAN UP AND LET THE PAINT DRY (24 HOURS)
Once the paint has dried completely, you will need to clean it up. Remove all painter’s tape and then clean up your tools with soap and water. Then let everything dry for 24 hours before using them again or putting them away.
STEP FIVE: SEAL THE WOODWORK AND BASEBOARDS
Latex paint will peel if allowed to dry on bare wood, so a sealer is a must for both the woodwork and baseboards. However, in this step, you need to use a different kind of sealer than that used for priming because you are painting over the paint. A good oil-based sealer will protect the woodwork, but it should be used sparingly, or else it could peel off too.
STEP SIX: LAYER THE PAINT
If you wish, you can apply another layer of paint on top of your first layer using a roller. This is highly recommended if you want a highly professional and finished look. Just let the first layer of paint dry for 24 hours before applying another, and give it time to be completely dry.
STEP SEVEN: APPLY SECOND COAT TO WALLS
You can use a roller or a brush to apply your second coat of paint to the wall. Let it dry for another 24 hours before putting on the finishing touches, which is to remove all painter’s tape and clean up your tools with soap and water.
STEP EIGHT: APPLY PROTECTIVE COATS TO WOODWORK AND BASEBOARDS
After you have finished putting the second coat of paint on the walls, and it has dried completely, you can put a protective coat on the woodwork and baseboards to seal them. This will ensure that your paint job lasts as long as possible.
STEP NINE: ADD DECOR TO THE WALLS
At this point, the painting is complete and all that is left for you to do is to decorate your walls. You can put up a few pictures, a mirror, or a painting for a more finished look.
Since reading this article, I have been thinking about how it might be better to start off your room going from the corner farthest from the door and work your way to the door as you apply paint working from top to bottom. Also, when rolling paint onto the walls with a roller, what will happen is that without even knowing it you could end up with pooling. Pooling is when there are puddles or pools of paint on your painting surface (the wall) and this can be particularly noticeable if the colors aren’t perfectly matched. For those reasons, I would recommend brushing the paint onto the wall instead of rolling it. I would also recommend that you go over your roller painting with a brush afterward to make sure that every surface has been properly covered and that there are no imperfections such as pooling, sags, or drips.
