Amazon Prime Video reveals the release date and the 1st photo
After three films in the cinema, not counting the trilogy The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings returns… in series. Announced a while ago by Amazon Prime Video, this project is eagerly awaited by many Tolkien fans. And you still have to be patient! This Monday, August 2, 2021, the platform unveiled a first official photo and the release date. Spoiler: we have time to see coming…
After very complicated months of filming that led to several serious accidents , the filming of The Lord of the Rings series is finally over. It was in November 2017 that Amazon announced that it was preparing a series around Tolkien’s universe and since then it has been a bit of a blur. Filming began in February 2020 in New Zealand before being interrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The actors then met again in September 2020 before finishing filming recently. History to prepare the fans who are already on fire, the platform has unveiled an overview of what awaits us and not only!
The Lord of the Rings series arrives on…
Just to make us want to, Amazon Prime Video has already revealed the release date of the Lord of the Rings series . And it’s not for now! The show will be launched on September 2, 2022 on the platform, almost 85 years after the publication of The Hobbit (released on September 21, 1937 in the United States). Amazon Prime Video will offer one episode per week and nothing more is known at this time. Only consolation? The series is already renewed for a season 2. Ok, it’s not much but it’s better than nothing.
This new series based on Tolkien’s novels will take place during the Second Age, thousands of years before the action of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies . “ A cast of familiar and new characters will come face to face with the dreaded re-emergence of the evil spirit of Middle -earth,” reads the official synopsis. This spirit should, logically, be Sauron.
A first photo revealed
In addition to the release date announcement, Amazon also revealed the first photo from the series. An image already dissected by the biggest fans of the universe and which would represent, according to theories, Valinor, home of the Valar, present in the novel The Silmarillion , Tolkien’s work retracing the first Ages of Middle-earth.
Between now and the release of the series, we still have time to see the theories about the Lord of the Rings series flourish . In any case, we are already ready to see it!
The Rings of Power: big battle and big budget, reassuring trailer for the Lord of the Rings series
The release date is known: it is from September 2, 2022 that Amazon Prime Video will begin broadcasting The Rings of Power, the first live-action series adapted from the Lord of the Rings universe. And as we can discover in the trailer, despite the absence of Frodo or Legolas, we will have the right to new big battles and epic sequences.
19 years after the release of The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King and 8 years after the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies , the universe imagined by JRR Tolkien will return to our screens. However, it is not in the cinema that the Dwarves, Elves, Orcs & Cie will wage war this time, but in the world of series thanks to Prime Video .
The universe of Lord of the Rings arrives in series
On September 2, 2022, Amazon’s streaming platform will indeed begin broadcasting the fictional The Rings of Power , whose story will take place 4,500 years before the adventures of Frodo , during the Second Age of Middle-earth.
On the program here? Little information about the series is yet known, but as the title suggests, the plot should revolve around the role of the famous rings forged by order of Sauron for the rulers of the different kingdoms (3 for the Elves, 7 for the Dwarves, 9 for the Humans) who mischievously allowed him to control all this little world.
What we know for certain, however, is that we will find some characters well known to fans, whether Galadriel , Elrond or Isuldur , even if they will be worn this time by other actors. Likewise, the cast will logically be carried by heroes hitherto unknown but well established in the mythology of JRR Tolkien (Celebrimbor, Prince Durin IV), but also by completely new characters such as Arondir or Disa. Enough to expand this world and expect some tasty twists.
First reassuring images in the trailer
Unsurprisingly, this project is highly anticipated (and feared) by fans, but also very important for Prime Video. Ready to do anything to get their own Game of Thrones -style series , the leaders of the streaming platform did not hesitate to pull out the checkbook in order to offer us the best possible result (we are talking about an envelope of 465 million dollars for only 8 episodes for season 1).
A madness ? Yes, but the least we can say is that this budget can already be seen. This Sunday, February 13, 2022, on the occasion of the Super Bowl halftime , a first official trailer for the Rings of Power was unveiled (see our slideshow). And if the green backgrounds should unfortunately be of great importance in this project, this should not however prevent the creators from impressing us.
Whether in terms of the costumes or the absolutely sublime sets (even if a little too clean / school), or even the staging with the promise of a new big battle or epic action sequences, it should be difficult to get bored and not vibrate in front of the series. For the moment, it is still too early to say that the fiction will be up to the previous adaptation work of Peter Jackson, but it is already reassuring.
