Perhaps, you are interested to know about Wire Drawing Dies. The process is rather a simplified operation. But many are still unaware of the concept or have information about it. Conical dies present in the wire drawing is designed with a hole right at its centre. It is through this hole that steel rods or allows and non-ferrous metals are passed. The cone’s included angle is generally kept around 8 to 24 degrees. Also is noticed gradual reduction in material diameter since it gets pulled via the cone. It also results in the material’s plastic deformation. Significant increase is noticed in the material length caused by the wire drawing.
Materials used to produce die using this process
Constant wire wear and tear is noticed when constructing dies. This is because the wire drawing dies manufacturers pull out metal through it. Hence, they are produced from hard materials such as diamond, tungsten carbide and alloy steel. In a single pass, approximately 25 to 30 percent reduction can be found to take place in cross-sectional area.
About process annealing
The wire in any drawing wire plant needs to be passed through several dies. During the process, there is progressive reduction of diameter. The aim here is to achieve the desired diameter reduction. On passing through dies, the wire is strain hardened. It also undergoes plastic deformation. Moreover, its strength increases while its capability to undergo further plastic deformation tends to reduce.
Hence, the entire wire needs to be healed after which it is to be cooled to eliminate work-hardening effects. It is referred to as ‘in process annealing’. The material is produced ductile and soft to ensure drawing wire process takes place smoothly. Diamond drawing dies is quite tough.
About wire drawing process
Metal rods that is planned to be drawn as wires are to be cleaned fully in wire drawing. Oxide layer existing on the surface gets eliminated by placing material inside an acid bath. The experts state that the die containing the hold is held firmly in the wire drawing equipment. Material gets passed through it. There are also used several rotating drums or power driven spools to draw wire. The process tends to generate plenty of heat caused by friction between dies and the wire rod.
Friction arising within it can be diminished. This is achieved with the using of synthetic lubricant or dry soap. However, still, the dies and drums should be water cooled. For the dies, the most preferred material is stated as tungsten carbide. However, to draw fine wire, diamond dies or ruby dies are preferred.
It is possible to arrange the machines in tandem enabling the previous Diamond Drawing Dies drawn wire to get collected in sufficient quantity in coil form. Then it is fed within the next die to ensure further diameter reduction. This process speed however increases as the wire diameter gets reduced.
During the process, the major variables noticed are friction, die angle and reduction ratio. Diamond Drawing Dies can help control such parameters thereby ensuring process accuracy.
